A Community-Driven Trail System
Nestled in the heart of Kearns and West Valley City, Lodestone Regional Park (6252 W 6200 S, Kearns, UT.) now boasts a inclusive Cross-Country (XC) Mountain Bike Skills Course. This project began as a grassroots initiative by local high school mountain bike teams who hand-cut the initial trails, addressing the community’s need for accessible outdoor recreation.
Trail Features and Design
The skills course spans approximately 6 miles of bi-directional trails, allowing for varied loop combinations to suit different skill levels. Riders can expect:
Unlike traditional gravity-style bike parks, Lodestone’s XC design encourages both uphill and downhill riding, making it ideal for training and skill progression.
Serving the Community
Lodestone Regional Park is a 60-acre public park owned and maintained by Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, located in Kearns Metro Township and West Valley City. The western 20 acres, featuring natural slopes, now host a 6-mile XC Mountain Bike Skills Course designed for looping, bi-directional riding—different from typical gravity-style bike parks.
Originally built by local high school mountain bike teams, the course was created to give at least six underserved Utah High School Cycling League (UHSCL) teams a place to train and build skills close to home. While team training was the original focus, recent upgrades have expanded access. The skills course is now open to the public, featuring adaptive-friendly trails and welcoming all non-motorized users looking to develop off-road skills!
Our trail builders
Forestry and Trail Solutions, a small trail building company out of Durango, Colorado, was hired to improve the existing trail system and add skills development areas and features that can help high school mountain bike racers be competitive with kids from around the state. Brody Kunz and his crew have worked on several bike parks in Colorado that host high school mountain bike racers and he jumped at the chance to incorporate volunteer trail work days to get kids out, educate them about trail building and trail maintenance, and get their buy-in.
With the completion of the Mountain Bike Skills Course, FTS transformed the hard-scratch trail system into something that will be a tremendous recreational amenity for not just training mountain bike racers, but anyone who has an itch to try their riding skills on the brand new trail system at Lodestone Regional Park.
