The grand opening of the Rim to River Trail on October 24, 2024, marked a significant achievement for La Verkin, Utah, and Trails Utah.
This incredible trail, beginning near the River Rock Roasting Company at 281 W. 300 South, connects visitors to the beauty of Confluence Park, the Virgin River, and the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.
For those heading to Zion National Park, this trail is now a must-visit stopover that offers breathtaking scenery and unique geological features.
The Rim to River Trail project was made possible through a private-public partnership involving the River Rock Roasting Company, which granted an easement for the trail and provided additional parking to prevent congestion.
The City of La Verkin collaborated to make this vision a reality, ensuring the trail could serve the community while preserving the area’s natural beauty. Funding came from state grants and local resources, including the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation Mini-Grant, the Recreational Trails Program Grant, and La Verkin City’s contributions.
The idea for the Rim to River Trail began in 2022 but required only three months to construct, thanks to meticulous planning and execution by Trails Utah. As the central coordinator, we worked to secure funding, bring together talented trail builders like Rock on Walls & Falls, and overcome the engineering challenges posed by the steep canyon terrain. This project exemplifies what can be achieved through collaboration and determination.
The trail descends approximately 400 feet into the canyon below, starting at the newly constructed trailhead. Designed to be both functional and beautiful, the trail features natural basalt and volcanic rock, treated surfaces and a beautifully inlaid flight of stairs.
Unlike the dissolvable red rock that is common in the area, the volcanic rock, which used to be thought of as an ugly rock, was fully embraced in this project. The rock does not dissolve like the red rock, and it locks well because of its sharp points, which means it will last long after our lifetimes.
The steep terrain and environmental concerns presented significant challenges for engineers and builders. This project stumped numerous trail builders before finding the right team to tackle the job. By working from both the top down and the bottom up, crews meticulously carved out a safe, sustainable path through the canyon’s basalt walls. The result is a trail that blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings while providing a safe route for visitors.
The canyon at the base of the Rim to River Trail holds historical importance for La Verkin. By creating a trail that honors and preserves this history, the project has added a cultural dimension to an already stunning recreational resource. Visitors can now explore not only the area’s natural beauty but also its storied past.
Trails Utah extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this monumental project. From state agencies and local government to private partners and talented trail builders, this trail stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration.
Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor on your way to Zion, the Rim to River Trail offers an unforgettable experience. We hope to see you out there enjoying the fruits of this incredible effort!
While grants cover some costs, donations and membership dollars are crucial for ongoing planning and environmental reviews. Consider supporting Trails Utah through donations or becoming a sustaining member.
